Vinyl floors are installed by "floating" the planks over an underlayment or a preattached pad. Some laminate planks will have a built-in pad that won't need an additional layer. This pad is used to protect the new floors from moisture and helps to reduce noise. Floating floors can be installed over almost any surface.
